Anne Frank House Museum

anne frank's house

Anne Frank was born in the German city of Frankfurt am Main in 1929. Due to the rampant antisemitic sentiments in Germany, Anne’s parents, Otto and Edith Frank, decide to move to Amsterdam. There, Otto founded a company that traded in pectin, a gelling agent for making jam. Moreover, Anne Frank movies have played a pivotal role in Holocaust remembrance and in keeping the dialogue about Anne’s legacy alive.

In two years’ time, Margot grew 1 centimetre while Anne grew over 13 centimetres. On 1 December 1940, Anne's father, Otto Frank, moved the offices of the spice and gelling companies he worked for, Opekta and Pectacon, from an address on Singel canal to Prinsengracht 263. She had sustained an anoxic brain injury in the crash ... Which, according to her rep at the time, she would never recover from. Due to the home's desirable location -- Venice is a famous beachside neighborhood -- the current owners are looking to sell the residence for $1.35 million. These days, the house boasts a fresh coat of white paint with a black trim along the side.

If tickets can’t be obtained through Ticketswap either, then unfortunately it is not possible to visit the museum. If you do want to know more about Anne Frank’s life in Amsterdam, there are guided walking tours where a local guide can tell you all about Anne Frank’s life. The walking tour takes about 2 hours and gives you an insight into Anne Frank’s life, synagogues and war history. The tour is also perfect to do as a complement to the Anne Frank museum for when you did manage to book tickets. Stepping through the doors of the Anne Frank House is like walking into the pages of history.

Publication of the diary

If you plan to visit the museum, I advise you to book the tickets once they are available to get the best time slot for your trip. One of the centrepieces of the exhibition is the original diary of Anne Frank. Through her words, history comes alive, offering visitors an intimate insight into her thoughts, fears, and dreams during her time in the annex. Shortly after the book was published, visitors were shown around by the employees who had hidden the families and could see the secret rooms.

Reproduction of the original diary

Mr. Voskuijl built the piece of furniture.’ Anne Frank wrote in her diary on 21 August 1942. As a visitor, you experience this story through quotes, photos, videos, and original items. The former hiding place of Anne Frank attracted a huge amount of interest, especially as translations and dramatisations of the Diary had made her a figure known throughout the world.

Otto spent much of his time adding to this collection of objects to tell the story of his daughter and the rest of the group that lived together in secret. Containing a stove and dining table, during the day the living room was where the family spent time together and at nighttime this shared space was made into the bedroom for Otto, Edith, and Margot Frank. Taking Anne Frank House photos is not allowed – hence the significant lack of photos of the interiors of the museum in this post. I have inserted the only few photos of the outside area that can be taken and a few generic photos of the surroundings of the house. Anne’s life sadly ended at the age of 15 in March 1945 inside the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Historical Trips - Book your next historical adventure

When Anne’s older sister Margot received a call-up to report for a so-called ‘labour camp’ in Nazi Germany on 5 July 1942, her parents were suspicious. They did not believe the call-up was about work and decided to go into hiding the next day in order to escape persecution. In the spring of 1942, Anne’s father had started furnishing a hiding place in the annex of his business premises at Prinsengracht 263. These films have also driven interest in visiting the Anne Frank House, where visitors seek a deeper connection to the stories they have seen on screen. Planning a visit to the Anne Frank House immerses you right into the heart of the time’s dark history. To walk through the hallowed rooms where Anne penned her diary is a profound experience you shouldn’t skip out on in Amsterdam.

The Anne Frank House does have a cloak room where you can store your coat, umbrella, smaller bag, etc. However, they will not allow entry of anything larger than a sheet of paper—a backpack, shopping bags, suitcase, etc. Anne Frank died in Bergen-Belsen in March 1945, but her diary was later discovered by her father and published to worldwide acclaim.

Like, way earlier than you think you need to, just to be safe. There are places to eat and drink near the Anne Frank House; the scenery is beautiful so walking the neighborhood (but not straying too far) is always an option. Just, whatever you do, don’t miss your assigned time slot. Consequently, the Anne Frank House is also one of the most popular tourist sites in town so you must plan ahead.

In June 1945, Otto Frank was the only one of the people from the Secret Annex to return from Auschwitz. Together with his staff, Otto tried to rebuild Opekta and Pectacon, his companies. The former hiding place, the Secret Annex, was left empty.

The bathroom is the only room that was left pretty much as it was found. It was shared by the eight inhabitants of the Secret Annex. There was a sink and toilet, and they could only use it during certain times in order to avoid being heard by the workers in the warehouse. Anne decorated her room, just like any other teenager, with of pictures of notable Dutch royals and famous American film stars. Through the bookcase is the entrance hallway to the hideout.

The space is preserved just as it appears in the book and you’ll get to see for yourself so much of the story in real life. The earliest Anne Frank movies graced the silver screen not long after the posthumous publication of her celebrated diary in 1959. George Stevens brought to life the hidden quarters of the Anne Frank House and the faces of those who dwelled within its walls. This piece of media provided a tangible connection to the historical events of the Holocaust that ravaged Europe and beyond.

From my experience, I prefer to visit the museum in the evening since I can do more sightseeing in Amsterdam in the daytime. Nowadays, they presell all their tickets online, and getting elsewhere is impossible. If you see people selling tickets, that’s an illegal source. The program takes around 30 minutes and shares some information about the history of Anne Frank in the context of the Second World War and how the Nazis prosecuted the Jews. It is an excellent way to prepare for the visit, but it might not be a good idea for kids.

Still, for the best experience, we recommend staying within walking distance of the museum. Unfortunately, photography is not permitted within the Anne Frank House— a policy that helps maintain the solemnity of the site while allowing guests to engage more profoundly with the stories contained within its walls. Furthermore, the museum encourages visitors to explore the educational materials and resources provided, to fully grasp the historical context before their visit. Upon purchasing Anne Frank House tickets, guests are provided a specific time slot for entry. This system significantly reduces wait times and enhances the immersive quality of each visit. As you traverse the creaking floors of the Anne Frank House, you’ll be transported to the era of the second World War.
